Song Lyrics

Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child,
A long way from home, a long way from home.
Sometimes I feel like I’m almost done,
Sometimes I feel like I’m almost done,
Sometimes I feel like I’m almost done,
And a long, long way from home, a long way from home.
True believer,
True believer,
A long, long way from home,
A long, long way from home.

Song Story

A traditional African-American spiritual dating to the time of slavery in the United States, "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" is an honest expression of lament and pain in the midst of the brokenness of this world. Just as oftentimes the Psalmist prays "How long, O Lord" in a posture of distress, this anonymous song reflects on the pain of injustice, betrayal, and loneliness – yet not without hope. The "true believer" is one who pours out his or her heart to God in faith, trusting that even when God's ways are deeply mysterious, his faithfulness has been displayed in the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary. In this rendition, baritone Jubilant Sykes conveys the deep emotion of the Christian who cries out: "I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24), reminding us that when we feel alone, there is One to whom we can cry.
